It is now published so I checked this book out from my local library and found that it was a fast read. Twin themes of medicine and rowing are intertwined. However, the problem I had with this story was that the author made the sport of rowing seem much more dangerous than it is - implying that it is hard to get out of the shoes. The story includes a near drowning (the guy was unconscious so getting out of the shoes wasn't the real cause of the problem) and a drowning. Both of these incidents imply/state that being tied into the shoes is dangerous and that it is difficult to get out of the shoes. I don't flip too often but in my six years of rowing I don't remember anyone say they ever had problems getting out of the shoes when they flipped, especially when the shoes described in the book were Velcro vs. laces. Sara dedicates equal time to describing how she developed as a rower and how she developed as a person strong enough to free herself from her emotionally abusive marriage.

I was pleasantly surprised when Sara wrote of the help a reference librarian provided her - finding books and articles about rowing for Sara during her first year of rowing and how Sara reported her progress to the librarian, bringing her first medal to the library to share the victory with the librarian.

Much of the culture of rowing that Sara describes in learning to row in New York is a very different than the Rocky Mountain Rowing Club has. She felt she was an outsider because she wanted to row a single. Our club teaches students to row in singles so they can go out safely on their own right from the start and our coaching program includes singles as well as big boats.

Rabbit's Guide to Rowing Films

This British website is a fun place to find out more about movies with rowing themes or with rowing in the plot. What she finds there is a sinister plot that she may not be able to escape.”

(*p.55 from http://www.stmartins.com/Booksellers/minFall06.pdf)

Rowing Pathfinder

Path finders (lists of resources on a topic) are one type of assignment that students may have to do in library school and librarians may do in real life. Today I rowed and did some weight training so I was too exhausted to spend much time on studying. Instead I read:

Eakin's Mistress : A Jamie Ramsgill Mystery by James Bradberry.

Architect/sleuth Jamie Ramsgill goes for a job interview for a Philadelphia firm in which his old friend David Laycutt is a partner. When he arrives for his job interview, however, Jamie finds that Laycutt has disappeared and has taken almost all of the company's money. The story line revolves around a painting by Thomas Eakins, (famous among rowers for his paintings of rowing). It starts with blackmail, but ends up with several murders while Ramsgill tries to sort out the mystery behind the painting. (Is the painting a forgery or not?)

A fast enjoyable read, I finished it in one afternoon.

The Boys from St. Petri

The Boys from St. Petri was written by Bjarne Reuter.

This story takes place in 1942 and is about a group of young men who begin a series of increasingly dangerous protests against the German invaders of their Danish homeland.

Rowing connection: one of their early protests takes place while rowing an 8 in race.

This book won the Mildred L. Her cousin's boyfriend is the captain of Oxford's Ambrose College team so the team is staying at the house also. (The Cox sleeps in the closet because he is short!) I have been averaging 10 minutes on the erg every other week. It is not my favorite thing to do.

I'm currently reading On the Water by H.M. van den Brink, translated from the Dutch by Paul Vincent. Set in Holland, 1939 this story is told from the perspective on a teen age boy from working-class parents who doesn't fit socially into the traditional rowing scene but he and another boy, David, are chosen to row in a pair.

Several moments when reading the descriptions of rowing I knew just what the author was saying. Some examples:

p 26 - "The chaos in my body was nothing compared with the chaos that eight bodies can cause collectively. "

p 31 - "I had the constant suspicion that I might be the hitherto undiscovered defective cog-wheel in our machine, and that once I was removed things were bound to go smoothly."

p 39 - describing being in the stoke seat of the pair for the first time - "But the dizzying emptiness in front of me, towards which I had to move at each stroke, was something I couldn't get used to immediately."

I'm half way though the book and have read in reviews that the pair have Olympic hopes. Does the war interfere with their dreams? I'll keep reading and encourage you to find that out yourself.

Indoor Rowing

Our rowing club sponsors a indoor rowing race each winter.
