The Boys in the Boat, by Daniel James Brown

Part history, part biography, I thought that this book would be about just the main character, Joe Rantz, and the crew team he was part of. But the book covered so much more! It includes the history of George Pocock and the development of his boats, the great depression, the 1916 Olympics, Hitler and more.  If you enjoy books about overcoming adversity this is one you don’t want to miss! Reader’s who enjoyed Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken will enjoy this also.  One my top ten books for 2013!

FLAT WATER TUESDAY

Flat-Water-Tuesday-A-Novel - link to Amazon.com

If you want a book driven by relationships this will fill the bill. The rowing scenes ring true. I liked the storyline that Rob Carney, a champion single sculler, is fighting against his own image of himself, fighting his individual desires in order to be part of the crew and win the big race in an 8+ .  I recommend listening to the audio version of this book.

No Mark Upon Her, by Deborah Crombie

No Mark Upon Her is the 14th book in the Kincaid/James series; I haven't read the prior 13 books but was able to follow the relationships in the story with no problem.  The reader enters many worlds in this book: the world of the British police, the world of English rowing, the world of search dogs and their handlers.  Top that off with a storyline of a two working parents, newly married, struggling to build their relationships within a blended/adopted family.

Shadows of Glory, by William Woodruff

I tried to like this book, after having to order it in from Inter-library loan when my library district didn't have it. While it has some rowing in the beginning the main idea is the horror of WWII... spoiler... only one of the boys in the 8+ survive the war.
